Fur Industry Myths Busted - Vikki Lenola Speaks Up Against The Fur Industry

Myth: Animals aren't treated badly
Truth: The vast majority of the world's fur is made in China. There are no laws to protect animal welfare in China. Animals on fur farms there are routinely skinned alive as they claim this makes it easier to get the job done. This is despite the fact many Chinese citizens condemn this. In recent years, there has been action towards securing at least basic laws to protect animals, but nothing is available to protect fur farmed animals yet. In Canada, where I live, the regulations for fur farms are NOT extremely strict guidelines, but rather recommendations that are not enforced. Everywhere they are farmed, the animals suffer from psychosis from extreme confinement, injury and ill treatment. When caught in the wild, the animals are trapped and often try to chew their own limbs off in attempt to escape. In all cases, workers are routinely caught enjoying and bringing more unnecessary torture to the animals.

Myth: Labelling or calling the fur 'coon', 'raccoon', or 'finn raccoon' fur.
Truth: This is actually from an animal called a raccoon dog. It is classified as a Canidae, meaning it is a dog. Saks Fifth Avenue recently had to pay $55,000 because of their mislabelling of these dog furs. Imagine the legal team they had. They lost because this is the scientific fact and you canít get around that. As consumers we deserve transparency so we can make informed decisions. Donít let retailers lie to you. These animals are farmed in China, not North America, and suffer the worst of the worst.
